Frequently Asked Questions
Add all student grades and divide by the number of students. Example: Grades 85, 90, 78, 92, 88: (85+90+78+92+88) / 5 = 433 / 5 = 86.6% average.
Mean is the average (sum / count). Median is the middle value when sorted. For 78, 85, 88, 90, 92: mean = 86.6%, median = 88%. Median is less affected by outliers.
Count how many students fall in each grade range. Example: 90-100% (A): 2 students, 80-89% (B): 2 students, 70-79% (C): 1 student. This shows A: 40%, B: 40%, C: 20% distribution.
Consider curving if the class average is significantly below your target (e.g., average 70% when you expect 80%). Common methods: add points to everyone, scale percentages, or adjust grade boundaries. Always discuss with department policy.
